On the evening of October 1, 2023, at approximately 6:45 p.m., two non-resident individuals convened at the Southgate Village Shopping Center in Pelham for a Marketplace transaction. The transaction, originally for a cell phone, took an alarming turn when both parties brought firearms to the meeting. As tensions escalated, a 16-year-old male hailing from Birmingham, positioned outside the victim’s vehicle, discharged his firearm three times.

In the face of adversity, Pelham residents exhibited a commendable commitment to community and public safety, swiftly dialing 9-1-1 to report the incident. A rapid response from the Pelham Police Dispatch Center dispatched Pelham Police and Fire to the scene, who promptly provided aid to the wounded victim and initiated a thorough investigation. Fortunately, the victim, a 21-year-old man seated in the rear passenger side of the vehicle, sustained non-life-threatening injuries, thanks to the swift actions of the Pelham Fire Department. The female driver emerged unscathed. Meanwhile, the juvenile assailant sought refuge in a nearby motel before making his getaway in a white vehicle waiting for him.

The Pelham Patrol and Criminal Investigations Divisions wasted no time harnessing technology, witness accounts, and physical evidence to pinpoint the suspect and his vehicle. The cooperation of the Hoover Police Department proved invaluable during the initial response. Within a matter of hours, the Pelham Police Department apprehended the 16-year-old suspect in Birmingham, preventing further harm on that fateful Sunday night.

“The expeditious response and diligent investigative efforts of the Pelham Police Department effectively curtailed any further harm by this individual,” expressed gratitude a police spokesperson.

While public parking lots generally serve as safe havens for daytime marketplace transactions, citizens must remain vigilant to potential risks. If any aspect of the transaction or the environment raises concern, it is strongly advised to consider canceling the meeting.

In an effort to enhance community safety, the Pelham Police Department has established two designated “Safe Trade Zone” parking spaces, clearly marked with green paint, located on the south side of our building at 32 Philip Davis St, Pelham, AL 35124.
